Outline (in English)

Course Outline: In this class, we learn about Edo/Tokyo as a premise for reading comprehension, while examining old maps and ukiyo-e woodblock prints.
Learning Objectives: The aims of the class are to become more conscious of where we are, and of the settings of works of literature, while gaining knowledge about old maps and ukiyo-e. Students learn to collect and digest relevant information, and report on it. Comparing urban areas of the past and present gives students insight into how they are formed and evolve.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: 1 to 2 hours of preparation on the topic of each lecture, and a similar amount of time of review. This will occasionally be supplemented with short assignments.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Grading is based on the following: written reactions to each lecture (60%); mid-semester assignments (20%); and final report (20%).
