Outline (in English)

People can learn to talk by the time they are 3-4 years old, but learning to read and write takes more time and effort. Meanwhile, building computers that can talk as fluently as people has been and continues to be a challenge. Why is this? This course addresses these questions by introducing students to the cognitive processes underlying the use of spoken language. Students will learn about how spoken language is produced and perceived, what physical characteristics spoken language have, and how it is processed by adults, children, and non-native speakers.
