Outline (in English)

Santi Tangshi is an anthology (a total of 494 poems were collected) believed to be compiled by Zhou Bi in the South Song Dynasty, which is known to have been read quite broadly in Japan during the Muromachi period. In this course, we will select and closely read exemplary poems from Santi Tangshi, and while appreciating its charm, we will complete an original translation by critically examining Japanese translations, as well as commentaries written in literary Chinese. In addition, we will learn the social background, culture and custom during the Tang dynasty which formed the foundation for the creation of Tang poetry, as well as forms and rules of Tang poetry.
