Outline (in English)

This course elucidates the concept of human dignity. Human dignity means the absolute value of human being. And it is also ground to respect a human being. Recently in Japan, human dignity came to be mentioned by laws to regulate the use of the new biotechnology. However, there is no agreement about what human dignity means. Therefore, considering arguments of western philosophy and applied ethics, this course presents meanings of human dignity. Being a concept which derives from western thoughts, human dignity came to attract attention as a basis of fundamental human rights after World War Ⅱ. But there is severe criticism against this concept. In this course you will discuss with human dignity in various contexts of applied ethics and finally think about human absolute value.
