Outline (in English)
We read "Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man" (by Marshall McLuhan) chapter by chapter. The goal of this class is to study the essence and function, cultural and social transformations regarding various media, and to understand the concept of media. Expected study time for each class is more than four hours. The overall grade will be decided based on presentation in each class (70%) and in class contribution (30%).

Marshall McLuhanの『Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man』をテキストにして、原典講読を行う。原典の講読を通して、メディアの概念やメディア研究の理解を深める。
到達目標Goal
原典講読を通して、現代の多様なメディアの本質と機能から、文化と社会の変容について学び、メディアの概念を広く理解できるようになる。それと同時に、メディア研究について、自ら社会学的に考え、理解することができるようになる。

授業の受講者がテキストの各章を分担し、ぞれぞれの内容のレジュメを準備して報告、討論する。必要に応じて、派生的なテーマについても、受講者が学習と報告を行い、全体の討議に資するようにする。
