Outline (in English)

Acquire an overview of the history of literary criticism in the Japanese modern literature through the writings of each critic and the stream of criticism.

Course Outline: This course provides an overview of the history of literary criticism in modern Japanese literature, in terms of both the writings of individual literary critics and the criticism itself.
Learning Objectives: Students who successfully complete this course will: 1. understand the role of criticism in modern literature; 2. gain a relative perspective on the history of modern Japanese literature; and 3. develop their own critical eye.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Although specialized knowledge of the history of modern Japanese literature is not required, students are encouraged to read the works of authors and critics discussed in class according to their own interests and goals.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Grades will be based on a comprehensive evaluation, with 50% for regular work and 50% for presentations (assignments).
