Outline (in English)

【Course outline】What is the "unconscious"?
We all have dreams. But do we always see them when we want to? It's not so easy. And why do we say things wrong? Why do we have desires and needs? These are the result of the "unconscious," according to Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), the founder of psychoanalysis.

In 2023, we will philosophically consider the unconscious discovered by psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis, founded by Freud, was succeeded by the French structuralist Jacques Lacan (1901-1981) in the latter half of the 20th century. Moreover, from the end of the 20th century to the 21st century, "neuropsychoanalysis" emerged as an attempt to connect brain science and neuroscience with Lacan's psychoanalysis.

Therefore, in this class, while taking up Lacan's theories, we will philosophically analyze the relationship between cranial nerves and the unconscious through the "neuropsychoanalysis" method.

【Learning Objectives】
At the end of the course, students are expected to learn the basics of the relationship between consciousness and the unconscious and to be able to explain the structure of the unconscious philosophically.
