Outline and objectives

English Application is an integrated 4-language skill communication course with a focus on an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or English for Specific Purposes (ESP) content area. Students will discuss and examine various cultural issues as well as present on related cultural topics.

Goal

The goal of English Application is to give Post-SA students a forum to continue to use and enhance their English Communication skills. Students will be able to examine cultural issues and gain a better understanding of how others see Japan. This course explores English related to contemporary social and cultural topics, and offers a forum for students to make contrasts and comparisons with life in Japan.

When the university's Action Policy (Conduct Guideline) Level is 2, this class will be conducted online in principle. Details will be communicated via the Learning Managing System.

Students will discuss and examine various cultural issues as well as present on related cultural topics. Students will receive feedback and comments on homework assignments and in class activities throughout the term.

Week 1[対面/face to face]:Class Orientation: Student Selection & Class Overview

Brief English lecture on course content, students’ responsibilities, and grading criteria. Students take notes, followed by short class discussion and written assignment.

Week 2[対面/face to face]:Describing Your Life: Language activities centering around student life

English reading, pair work exercises, and small group discussions on describing student centered life experiences.

Week 3[対面/face to face]:Describing Other Lives: Language activities centering around family and acquaintance routines

English reading, pair work exercises, and small group discussions on describing the daily routines and life experiences of other people.

Week 4[対面/face to face]:Explaining Customs in Your Country: Holidays, national/regional habits

English reading, pair work exercises, and small group discussions focusing on Japanese customs, holidays, and regional or national habits.

Week 5[対面/face to face]:Explaining Customs in Selected Asian Countries: Holidays, national/regional habits
Research habits: Conducting group research—different sharing tips

English reading, pair work exercises, and small group discussions focusing on different Asian customs, holidays, and regional or national habits. Followed by instructor led discussion on how to conduct group research.

Week 6[対面/face to face]:Explaining Customs in Selected Western European Countries: Holidays, national/regional habits
Outlining of presentations: Cluster and formal outlining

English lecture, reading and small group discussions of some Western European holidays and regional habits. Followed by instructor led discussion on ways to outline a presentation.

Week 7[対面/face to face]:Discussion of Asian and Western National Differences: National holidays, national/regional habits
Presentation Tip—Explanation of Structure: Introduction/Body/Conclusion

English lecture, reading and group discussion of difference between Asian and Western holidays and regional habits. Followed by instructor led discussion on standard presentation structure and a written assignment.

Week 8[対面/face to face]:Discussion of South American Customs in Selected Countries: Discussing cultural difference
Presentation Tip—Use of Voice and Posture: Voice and body language dos and don'ts for English public speaking

English lecture, reading and small group discussions on some South American customs. Followed by instructor led discussion on the important things to remember and do and not do when making a presentation.

Week 9[対面/face to face]:Discussing Food Habits: Diet and how it affects customs
Presentation Tip—Use of Slides: Slide making dos and don'ts

English lecture, and group discussion on how customs are affected by people’s diets and food supplies. Followed by instructor led discussion on making presentation slides.

Week 10[対面/face to face]:Habits of Selected Parts of Africa: National holidays, national/regional habits
Presentation Tip—Group Work: Making sure group members pull their weight and the presentation slides are together

English lecture, reading and group discussion on some African national holidays and habits. Followed by instructor led discussion on how to make sure all members of a group presentation work well together and a written assignment for group presentations.

Week 11[対面/face to face]:Examination of Sports by Continent in Selected Countries: Sports comparison by types, number of players
Presentation tip—Final Slide Editing: Run through checklist of questions to ask on the final edit

English lecture, reading and small group discussions of sports in some countries and they can differ. Followed by instructor led discussion and advice on editing a presentation.

Week 12[対面/face to face]:African Presentations with Discussion of Main Themes: Discussion of presentations’
themes based on music, art, and traditional public customs
What would you do? — Culture clash examples

Student Group Presentations on African cultural theme incorporating vocabulary and concepts covered in previous lectures followed by question and answer session, and group discussion.

Week 13[対面/face to face]:South American Presentations with Discussion of Main Themes: Discussion of
presentations’ themes based on music, art, and traditional public customs
What are the rules? — Relook at sports, but ones with unusual rules

Student Group Presentations on South American cultural theme incorporating vocabulary and concepts covered in previous lectures followed by question and answer session, and group discussion.

Week 14[対面/face to face]:Course Overview Discussion of Contrasting Presentation Themes: Discussion of cultural contrasts from country to country and region to region

Recap lecture and group discussion of the cultural and regional themes covered in the semester.

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)

Homework, blog work, some presentation preparation. The standard preparation and review time for this class is four hours per week: 2 hours preparation and 2 hours review.

Textbooks

The instructor will provide some course material via handouts, websites, and class blog.

References

An English to English Dictionary is recommended.
This course will also use some online English News and Study Materials.

Grading criteria

75% Ongoing Evaluation (Participation, Discussions, Homework, etc.)
25% Short Presentations
Based on the grading criteria set by the instructor, students that successfully achieve 60% or more of course goals will be able to earn a passing grade for the course.
