Outline (in English)

(Course outline)
The purpose of this class is to develop the communicative competence necessary for effective participation in society and the world of work. The class aims to help students acquire a broad ability to communicate, starting from familiarity with daily conversation to explaining topics of students' own interest or field of study, while deepening understanding of foreign cultures necessary for global citizens. Based on a firm foundation of basic skills, the class focuses on the future needs and interests of students as well as the ability to apply English to research and work in a setting of small, leveled classes for maximum effectiveness.
(Learning Objective)
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- extend their vocabulary and expressions composing a short talk in practical, daily conversations.
- acquire their basic listening skills for watching most of Hollywood movies without subtitles.
(Learning activities outside of classroom)
Students are expected to:
- spend at least two hours doing preparation and review of every course content.
- keep listening everyday to many different types of material from every aspect of life.
- extend vocabulary more effectively by making their own vocabulary notebook.
(Grading Criteria/Policy)
Final grade will be calculated according to the following process:
13 weekly class assignments: 65%, term-end assignment: 25%, and in-class contribution; 10%.
Students will not be able to pass this course if they miss submitting more than 4 weekly class assignments except extreme circumstances.
