Outline (in English)

The purpose of this class is to develop the communicative competence necessary for effective participation in society and the world of work. The class aims to help students acquire a broad ability to communicate, starting from familiarity with daily conversation to explaining topics of students’ own interest or field of study, while deepening understanding of foreign cultures necessary for global citizens. Based on a firm foundation of basic skills, the class focuses on the future needs and interests of students as well as the ability to apply English to research and work in a setting of small, leveled classes for maximum effectiveness.
【Course outline】
This class aims to improve students’ practical ability of English. Students practice summarizing the contents of reading passages and work on questions in pair and discuss in group. In class, students have many opportunities to practice listening.
【Learning Objectives】
Students will be able to express their ideas in English smoothly and also to understand long news and lectures.
【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Your study time will be more than four hours for a class.
【Grading Criteria /Policy】
Attendance and contribution to the lecture：　60％
Submission of homework, and the result of mini tests：　40％
Your attendance to this class is mandatory (you can be absent only twice). Your contribution to the class is highly evaluated. You are required to well prepare for class. Listening test is conducted without notice.

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives

本授業は、英語を実社会で有効に使用して仕事をするために必要な英語のコミュニケーション力を養成することを目的とする。日常生活に関わる会話に慣れることから、自分の興味のあるトピックや専門領域の事柄について英語で説明できるところまで幅広いコミュニケーション力の習得を目指すとともに、国際人として異文化に対する理解を深める。確かな基礎力の上に、将来的ニーズや興味に即した英語力、研究や実務につながる応用力をつけられるよう、授業は習熟度別の少人数制で行い、効果向上を図る。

・英語の構文を正しく理解し、英文の内容と論旨を的確に把握できる。
・英文の要旨を、英語で適切にまとめられる。
・自分の考えを英語で組み立て、（効果的に）記述できる。
・ニュースなどまとまった内容の英語を聴き取ることができる。

演習が主体形式となります。ペアワークやグループワークが大きな比重を占め、文章の要約や練習問題、ディスカッションを行います。学生からの主体的な意見発表が求められます。リスニング練習を多く取り入れ、ニュースやレクチャーなどまとまった内容の英語を聞き取ることができるように訓練します。
