Outline (in English)

**Course outline**
To study linguistics, there are two kinds of viewpoint, one is to clarify the structure of "the language itself", and the another one is to research "how the language is used in the real context of society". The latter one is called "sociolinguistics" which will be dealt in this lecture.
The themes dealt on sociolinguistics are diverse (ex. divercity of language usage / language change / consciousness of "language disturbance" / regional dialect / communication / identity / language contact / language policy / ...). In this lecture, these topics will be put in range, while the themes of "regional variation in recent years" should be discussed with greater emphasis in this term. In addition, we would like to have an opportunity to actually learn a dialect (Okinawan dialect is planned) as a language.
**Learning Objectives**
The students are expected to be able to see and think in sociolinguistic and dialectological terms.
**Learning activities outside of classroom**
Students will be expected to prepare and submit assignments in advance (summarizing and critically reviewing the relevant sections of the textbook). Please be aware that a certain amount of time (typically 4 hours or more) will be required for preparation each time.
**Grading Criteria /Policy**
Preparatory work for each class (30%), and final report (70%).
In all cases, emphasis will be placed on the quality of the content rather than the quantity. Plagiarism and unauthorized quotations are not allowed in the assignments and final report, nor is writing only on the content of the textbook or the content presented by the instructor in the lecture.
