Outline (in English)
・Course Outline and Learning Objectives
Students will read passages of multiple paragraphs at a speed necessary for different purposes(e.g. speed-reading and close reading). Attention should be paid to paragraph structure, e.g., topic sentence, supporting sentence, and concluding sentence, and the logical relationship between paragraphs. Students will learn how to comprehend the structure and the argument of the passage, acquire the knowledge and information they need, and grasp the writer’s intention and feelings. In addition, the course will help students foster critical thinking skills, that is, skills to make an objective and multifaceted analysis of the given information, instead of accepting it unquestioningly.
The course will offer instruction of and practice in the development of effective listening skills. Students will also learn how to paraphrase what they have read, and then write in English a summary of and comments on what they have read.
・Learning Activities Outside of Classroom
University guidelines suggest preparation and review should be around an hour a week for a one-credit course.Please read the text and answer the questions for each class while carefully reading the dictionary. It is not necessary to prepare in order to understand all of the assigned articles, but rather to clearly identify what you do not understand and how, so that you can understand it in class.
・Grading Criteria /Policy
Class contribution (participation in group/pair work): 10%, writing assignments: 20%, mid-term and final exam: 35% each. Students who are absent more than 4 times will not be allowed to receive credit.

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
この授業は英語１からのステップアップとして、より長い英語の文章を速く正確に読み取る訓練を行います。これまで学んだ語彙や文法を利用して英語の資料を読みとくだけでなく、Introduction/Body/ Conclusion Paragraph, Thesis Statement, Topic Sentenceといった英文の構成をすばやく把握する能力を身につけます。また、読んだ英文を要約し、関連するトピックに対する意見を簡潔な英文で表現するパラグラフ・ライティングの練習を行います。
到達目標Goal
この授業は以下の６つを到達目標とします：
①長文の英語を正確にかつ速く読みとることができる
②現代の時事的な諸問題を扱った文章を読むうえで必要な語彙力を増やす
③わからない語句や文法があっても出来るだけ正確に推測することができる
④英語の文章の構成をすばやく把握する能力を習得する
⑤英文の内容を要約する方法を身につける
読んだ英文に関連するトピックに関する自分の意見を簡潔な英文で表現する方法を習得する

現代の時事的な諸問題を扱う英語のエッセイを各自予習として辞書をひきながら読み、あらかじめ指定されたエクササイズを解いてから授業に臨みます。授業ではその文章の内容や注意すべき文法事項、語彙、発音などを確認します。教師が確認する場合もありますが、グループやペアワークで確認してもらう場合が多いのでしっかり予習しましょう。基本的にひとつの文章につき3回授業を行います。同時に、読んだ文章を要約したり、トピックに対する自分の意見を短い英文にまとめたりする訓練を行い、ライティング課題を課します。ライティング課題はコメント・添削をしたのち、返却します。
学習内容の理解を確認・復習するための定期試験を学期中に２回行います。定期試験は授業内で解説を行います。

本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とします。毎回の授業のために辞書をていねいにひきながらテキストを読み、設問に答えてきてください。指定された記事のすべてをわかるために予習するのではなく、どこがどのようにわからないのかをはっきりと認識し、授業で理解できるようにするために予習をしましょう。定期試験は普段の予習と復習および小テスト対策をしっかりすれば確実に得点できるはずです。/University guidelines suggest preparation and review should be around an hour a week for a one-credit course.

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
授業への貢献 (グループ／ペアワークへの参加) 10%、ライティング課題20%、中間・期末試験各35%で評価します。欠席回数が4回以上で単位修得は不可となります。
