Outline (in English)

・This course aims to improve students’ four core English language skills-reading, writing, listening, and speaking-using a textbook made up of news stories drawn from CBS News shows that feature various current topics, especially in the US. Students will develop their abilities to accurately understand the information, think critically about the important current issues, and effectively express their ideas. The goals of this course are also to help students cultivate their understanding of various aspects of the world and acquire the habit of showing a diligent attitude toward more complex written or spoken information while trying to deal with what seems difficult for them to understand by referring to dictionaries or other necessary sources.
・Before each class meeting, students will be expected to have watched the relevant news, read its transcript, and answered the questions in the textbook. Required study time is at least one hour for each class meeting.
・Final grade will be decided based on term-end examination (40%), presentation (20%), and in-class contribution (40%). In principle, four and more absences will not be permitted per semester to receive academic credit for the course. Students 30 minutes or more late will be considered absent. If they will come late three times, they will be considered absent one time.
