Outline (in English)

Advertisements in modern society influence consumers in many ways including their brand selection and lifestyle. In addition, broad-term advertisement information delivered by the media is a content subject to consumption. Taking this situation into account, we will look at advertising in the broadest sense of the word in relation to consumption culture, discuss its function and clarify the role played by advertisement in our advanced mass consumer society by using semiotics. Students will realize how our values and behavior styles are incorporated in the advertising environment. The class is designed to provide the basic skills to sort out and process subjective and self-directive media information.
Through studying the characteristics and structure of advertising expressions and consumer culture representations, students will be able to grasp the multilayered meanings of advertisements and acquire an educational knowledge of consumer culture in a broad sense.
They will also actively view advertisements, films, and dramas in their daily lives. If there are any preparatory studies or assignments, they will be given in class as appropriate. The standard preparation and review time for this class is two hours. Evaluation is based on ordinary points (70%) and examinations (30%). Assignments presented in class are submitted to the learning support system. The number of submissions and their contents will be evaluated. In addition, a special assignment will be given in the final session as an alternative to the essay exam. The combined score of both assignments will be the final assessment.
