Outline (in English)

In this lecture, students will study the shortcomings (failures) of markets and how to design economic institutions and policies aimed at eliminating them. First, we will learn about market failures caused by the existence of externalities. We understand that the implementation of economic policies through the internalization of externalities is the key to solving these problems. Next, we will study the market failures caused by the existence of public goods. Finally, students will learn about the importance of designing economic institutions that take into account the incentives of economic agents. By applying the mechanism design theory, students will learn how to solve the problem of free-riding on public goods.

Continuing from Public Economics A, the goal of this course is to understand the advantages and disadvantages of a market economy based on microeconomics and to consider the desired relationship between markets and government in modern society. In this class, we will focus on the role of governments for defects of the market economy.

Students are required to prepare and review this class for at least four hours per week. Students are also required to review Microeconomics AB (2nd year) and the lecture materials distributed by the class support system (Hoppii) to prepare for the lecture.

Evaluation will be based on classroom examinations (100%). Details will be announced in the lecture.
