Outline (in English)

Course Outline: In the first half of the course, students will learn about how written Japanese is laid out and proofread. Students will learn to use basic proofreading symbols. The second half of the course will look back at the history of the book and how the form of the book has transformed, situate current e-books and web-based content within that history, and consider the future of the book.
Learning Objectives: In the spring semester, we dealt with the process of editing and producing books and magazines. In the fall semester, students will learn about “proofreading” and “layout,” which could not be discussed in detail in the spring semester. Many of you may have used the typesetting software InDesign to create magazines, and anyone can use InDesign to create typesetting easily. However, without knowledge of the norms of layout that form the basis of typesetting, it is impossible to create beautiful and accurate typesetting. This lecture will review how written Japanese is laid out, a subject that we take for granted, from an editorial point of view. In the second half of the course, we will do a rough survey of the history of books and situate digital books as a new image of books within that history. However, the current digital book is still in its infancy. Students will acquire perspectives to view and appreciate both e-books and paper books.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Students are encouraged to use catalogs available in libraries and other institutions to investigate the various forms of books from the past and present. For the history of books, knowledge of Japanese and world history is required as background. Students should study the historical background of the period applicable to the class content in advance. The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.
Grading Criteria/Policy: The evaluation of your performance will be based on your participation in the class (50%) and the contents of your final report (50%).
