Outline (in English)

We survey historical law and trial to develop a historic viewpoint to understand modern law and deepen recognition about a characteristic of the law in each time.
1. Be able to enumerate basic matters regarding Japanese law and court cases in pre-modern times.
2. Be able to outline the characteristics of laws and trials in each era.
3. Compare pre-modern legal systems and modern legal systems.

The standard preparation and review time for this class is two hours each.
(Preparatory study)
Read the textbook thoroughly before attending. If there are any pre-assignments, please complete them before the relevant lecture. It is recommended that the preparatory study time be at least one hour per lecture.
Please note that in order to check your understanding and conduct interactive lectures, you may be required to submit a reaction paper (on an irregular basis, approximately 5 minutes, free to submit).

(Post-study)
If you have any questions or points that are unclear, try to resolve them as soon as possible by asking the instructor, using the university library's collection, etc. It is recommended that the review time be approximately one hour per lecture.

Students will be evaluated based on the final exam performance (70%) and discussion efforts (30%).
The final exam tests students' basic knowledge of Japanese legal history and their understanding of the laws and court cases of each era.
During the discussion in the lecture, the contribution to the discussion, the content of the discussion, and the results will be evaluated.
