Outline (in English)
This class will include English conversations about everyday topics (for example, asking/answering ''How are you?''/ ''How was your weekend?''/ ''What are your plans for this weekend?''/etc.)
+ Also included: discussion about timely, current International News topics & discussion topics. (Some recent News videos may be shown/watched.)
+ IF there's enough time (& IF there is student interest): we can watch & discuss some English TED TALK videos.
+ Student requests are welcome: if enough students request a topic for study, your teacher might be able to practice/study that, in English.

This is an English course to assist students to further develop their English proficiency, via content-based English-learning. Your teacher hopes that discussing many International topics will assist students to speak up more boldly, to say their opinions in English. Students will be urged to learn to explain in English their answers to questions about Current International News videos.

Students will learn about cultures & social practices from around the English-speaking world; and will also learn how to explain Japanese culture to English-speaking people in this Global Society.
Students will be encouraged to learn how to think critically [in-depth] about important Global Issues; and will be urged to effectively express their own thoughts and opinions in modern English.

Students will be challenged to integrate their skills in English listening, speaking, reading, & writing in an advanced manner, via exposure to authentic English materials such as English News videos & audio, and inspirational video/audio talks (including TED Talks). Students will then be required to practice their English communication skills via pair practice conversations with their classmates & professor.

Introduction vocabulary; & 'EQ' responses thereto. Students will be asked to express English opinions, re: English video.

How to say (speak) your own opinions, in English...and how to EXPLAIN them.
第3回[対面/face to face]:Using the Future tense in English, to explain your weekend or future plans.
Active English spoken expressions, re: future plans.
第4回[対面/face to face]:Using English Past tense to explain your weekend activities, in spoken English.
Atively speaking about the recent Past, in spoken English, using the English Past Tense.
第5回[対面/face to face]:''How are you?'' & Speaking test.
Pairwork will be used to practice many, various ways to reply dynamically in English, to questions such as ''How's it going?''/ ''How are you doing?''/ etc. Speaking test.
第6回[対面/face to face]:Expressing your opinions about Current Affairs News video #2, in active, dynamic spoken English.
Pair practice: saying (speaking) your opinions about English videos, in
modern English.
第7回[対面/face to face]:Speaking (& elaborating in detail), in modern English, about your five active hobbies.
Pair practice & questions about hobbies: students will learn how to speak their opinions (in English) to classmates.

Lots of practice in spoken English, to explain student opinions about the topics raised by the video.
第9回[対面/face to face]:Explaining how to ask for (& give/speak) street directions, in clear English.
Practicing asking/giving English directions, as pair practice.

Much practice in spoken English, to explain student opinions about the topics raised by the video. Reviewing & practicing topics for the Speaking Test.
第11回[対面/face to face]:Using 'would' & Past tense, vs. "will' & Present tense.
Pair practice & questions, re: 'would'/ Past Tense; & 'will'/ Present Tense. Speaking Exam.
第12回[対面/face to face]:Speaking Exam. Then, final 'wrap up' & summary, including questions about Summer plans.
Speaking Exam. After that: Pair practice regarding Summer plans.

Please do homework well before the deadline [NOT ''ichiyazukke'']; please try to arrive in class ON TIME [not late]; please try not to do too much overtime work; and please keep a weekly notebook/binder for this class, using pen.

Some inexpensive handouts will be distributed and/or e-mailed to students.
In addition, some News videos & video documentaries may be assigned as in-class or at-home viewing (with questions to answer about those videos).

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
Tentatively, grading may depend on in-class responses (approximately 25%); speaking exam(s) answers (approximately 30%); attendance/on-time arrival (approximately 15%); class participation/motivation (20%); and homework (10%).
*IMPORTANT: A MAXIMUM OF THREE ABSENCES IS ALLOWED...& ONE LATE IS EQUIVALENT TO HALF AN ABSENCE*

学生が準備すべき機器他Equipment student needs to prepare
Please bring to each class: a notebook/binder; a black pen; a red pen; an English-Japanese/Japanese-English dictionary [paper or electronic]; an English language LARGE namecard; and a daily planner/schedule book [a 'techo', in Nihongo].
A fast COMPUTER with a large screen, a full keyboard, and fast Wi-Fi, will be useful in viewing any News video homework; and in typing up answers to bring to class. (Smartphones are TOO SMALL to do homework effectively.)

Please participate ACTIVELY in class; please sit together with other students, in class, AT THE FRONT OF THE ROOM; and please speak together with your classmates, using lots of eye contact, smiling, & good Body Language. If you're not sure about how to answer, please speak up and GUESS...instead of reflexively answering ''I don't know''.
Class etiquette: please fully cover your nose & mouth, if/when you cough/sneeze/yawn.
If a student becomes ill, he/she should stay home, to avoid infecting classmates & the teacher.
