Outline (in English)

In this lecture, we will think about Noh (Kayo) and its surroundings, especially concerning Japanese Buddhism.
Haiku and Tanka have a fixed form, so they stimulate the imagination of people. It is needless to say that this form (the framework of the story) reflects the circumstances and expectations of people when this entertainment is created. Under such circumstances, what was expected for this entertainment? what kind of historical society did affect the establishment of the form? What kind of imagination from that form was newly promoted?
The goals of this course are to Understand Nogaku.
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.
Final grade will be calculated according to the following process term-end examination (80%), and in-class contribution(20%).
