Outline (in English)

The objective of this course is to study hydrothermal formation and geomorphic processes associated with "water" and "volcanic activity" in the central to southern regions of Oita Prefecture, as well as to study the history of human activities. Through this class, students will be exposed to methodologies of regional studies that transcend the boundaries between the humanities and sciences, and will explore how geographical perspectives can be placed in such studies.

Through this class (field research), students should be able to acquire the following points.

(1) To be able to understand how the quality of hydrothermal water (so-called hot spring) produced underground is chemically formed.
(2) To be able to understand the hydrological approach to understand where hydrothermal water is obtained and where it flows, and to be able to relate this to the geographical background.
(3) To be able to understand geological features caused by volcanic activities and the geomorphic processes associated with them.
4) To deepen understanding of various natural phenomena and to consider how they have affected human activities.
(5) Based on the above, to be able to consider the significance of fieldwork in elucidating regional history and the qualities required in the field of geography.

Please make sure that you have a basic understanding of the region in advance. It is also recommended that students review high school chemistry (inorganic chemistry) and high school Japanese history (manors and villages).
Since this class is a hands-on class, at least 2 hours of study outside of class for each session is the standard.

Evaluation will be based on active participation in class (40%) and post-class report (60%).
