Outline (in English)
The emphasis throughout the will be on the active engagement by students in all aspects of the course.To this end, thorough preparation and a willingness to participate actively at all stages of any given debate and/or presentation will be expected.
The final grade will be based upon:
i.A total of two graded presentations and two graded debates each worth a maximum of 20% =80%.
ii.Class participation 20%.
Students are expected to play an active role in all aspects of this class in order to foster and maintain an academically challenging environment throughout the course.

授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
This is the lower-level Presentation and Debate course.
The course will present students with a range of topical global issues that lend themselves to discussion, debate and formal presentations. It is designed to give students the ability to identify, analyze, explain, summarize and evaluate the key arguments that underpin a variety of global political issues. Practical advice will be given advice on how to give academic presentations, Students will learn the mechanics of debate and how to hone their analytical and delivery skills so as to more effectively defend their case within an academically challenging environment.

This course aims to develop students' presentation and debating skills so that they are able to exchange opinions and enhance critical thinking and reasoned decision making abilities.The focus will be on building, presenting and evaluating arguments.

A variety of topical issues related to global politics will be examined, with students given the opportunity to investigate topics related to their own particular interests as the course progresses. Students will be offered guidance in their research and information gathering activities, instruction in using appropriate language and delivery techniques, and help in developing their critical listening and evaluation skills.
By the end of the course students will have an improved understanding of the procedures and constrictions of making academic presentations and should be able to conduct debates with increased confidence and effectiveness.
* Important: Depending upon the COVID-19 situation,part or all of this course may be conducted online. As such, this syllabus is flexible and changes may occur. If online, Zoom will be the main platform used. Students will need a device that is connected to the internet and familiarity with Zoom protocol.
Feedback for homework and other assignments will be provided via Zoom and email, as well as during class (if the lessons are face-to-face).
