Outline (in English)

[Course outline]
The information and media industries play a very important role in modern life. In addition, the information industry is constantly changing due to high levels of technological innovation. Understanding their structure, challenges and future is important for making better decisions as consumers and business people in response to technological and market trends. This course aims to provide students with an understanding of the industrial structure, business models, issues and future prospects in the media and other information industries. During the course, students will learn about industry trends, technology evolution, market trends and corporate strategies.

Objectives of the class (what you will learn).
1.The evolution and current state of the media industry: to follow the evolution of the media industry from the past to the present and to understand the current state of the media industry.
2.Understanding the impact of advances in information technology on the media industry, and the ways in which media technology has been transformed by these advances, its lights and shadows.
3.Media business models: understand how media business models are being transformed by new media technologies. Also, learn about the types and characteristics of media business models such as paid, free and advertising revenue.
4.Globalisation of the media industry: the media industry has become a global marketplace, and students will understand the state of the media industry in Europe and the US, its impact on domestic markets, and issues related to the sharing and distribution of media between countries.


[Learning activities outside the classroom].
To deepen your understanding of the current development of media services on a daily basis by always being interested in newspaper, television and internet news sites. To deepen your understanding by revising the questions answered in class and the materials distributed. The standard study and revision time for each lesson is 2 hours.

[Grading Criteria / Guidelines]
Grades are determined by class attendance (40%), number of questions submitted per class session (10%), a short report on the NHK Science & Technology Lab Open House (10%), and an end-of-term report (40%).
