Outline (in English)

【授業の概要(Course outline)】
The purpose of this class is to acquire the basic knowledge of POWER Writing and Paragraph Writing. Students will be able to summarize their opinions and ideas in a single paragraph, and to use the knowledge and the skill in essay writing and academic writing. Through the practice of POWER Writing and Paragraph Writing, students will learn how to compose English essays, and apply the skills to composition of reports and papers in Japanese.

1. Students acquire the basic knowledge of POWER Writing.
2. Students understand the various types of Paragraph Writing.
3. Students learn how to write an essay
4. Students pick up words, phrases, and grammars which are necessary for more natural, academic writing expression.

【授業時間外の学習(Learning activities outside of classroom)】
Practice makes perfect. Your strenuous effort help your comprehension of POWER writing and Paragraph writing.
Students are expected to spend three hours on preparation and review.

1. Students should read through the designated chapters in the textbook in advance.
2. Students will prepare for the dictation test.
3. Students will be required to compose two essays, so students should think about what they will write about.

【成績評価の方法と基準(Grading Criteria /Policy)】
1. English composition on the final assignment (30%*)
2. Mid-term English composition assignment (20%*)
3. Quiz and dictation test (30%)
4. Attitude (group discussion, presentation, attendance) (20%)

The following points will be used to evaluate 1. and 2.
A. Whether the essay is written in accordance with POWER Writing and Paragraph Writing.
B. Whether the number of words in the essay reache the lower end.
C. Whether there is typographical errors and omissions.
D. Whether words and grammar is used correctly.
