Outline (in English)
【授業の概要(Course outline)】
This class reinforces the development of a rich vocabulary and accurate grammatical knowledge, and based on this knowledge, aims at the comprehensive development of the four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking). In the science and engineering fields, English is the common language. Technicians and scientists of the future will need the ability to comprehend and communicate in English to meet the need of society for high levels of English. In order to meet this need, this class emphasizes the development of basic, comprehensive skills and knowledge and the ability to apply them. Based on the needs of students, a variety of effective approaches will be used to strengthen basic English competency.
【到達目標(Learning Objectives)】
1) Acquire natural English sentences based on correct grammar, word usage and collocation.
2) Acquire natural English sentences not only in written form but also in audio form.
3) To be able to express Japanese expressions effectively in English, keeping in mind the differences between Japanese and English ideas, rather than translating them directly.

The standard study time outside of class for this class is 1 hour.

【成績評価の方法と基準(Grading Criteria /Policy)】
Mid-term exam (40%), final exam (40%), assignment submission (20%), the total of 60% or more is required to receive credit for the course. As a general rule, no credit will be given for four absences during a semester. Two late arrivals or early departures will be counted as one absence.

授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
本授業は、豊かな語彙力・正確な文法力の定着を図ると同時に、それに支えられた4技能(リーディング、ライティング、リスニング、スピーキング)の総合的な向上を目的とする。理工・生命系の分野では、英語が世界共通語になっていることを受け、将来の技術者・研究者には必要な専門知識を英語で受信・発信できる英語力に加え、社会の要求に応えられる高度な英語運用能力の習得が求められる。本授業では、そのための基礎力・総合力・応用力をつけるべく、学生の英語力を基にどのスキルに重点を置くか見極めた上で、効果的な教授方法を取り入れて実施する。

1)正しい文法と語法・コロケーションに支えられた自然な英文を習得できる。
2)自然な英文を文字だけでなく音声も合わせて身に着ける。
3)日本語的な表現を、日英発想の違いを念頭に置いて、直訳ではなく、効果的に英語で表現することができる。

中間試験(40%)、期末試験(40%)、課題提出(20%)60%以上で単位習得となる。学期中に4回欠席した場合、原則として単位は認めない。遅刻・早退は2回で欠席1回とみなす。
