Outline (in English)
【Course Outline】
The purpose of this class is to improve academic reading ability through
the development of basic vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure
analysis skills. Vocabulary development focuses on considering the
context and structure to discern meaning, rather than strict translation
between English and Japanese. Grammar and sentence structure
instruction emphasizes the use and application of previous knowledge
to read actual English. Using these skills, it aims to reinforce basic
reading competence as well as rapidly and concisely summarize the gist
of the content based on an understanding of paragraph structure.
【Learning Objectives】
The purpose of this class is to establish basic competence in reading
academic level English thorough analysis of grammar, development of
vocabulary, and knowledge of writing structure.
【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend one
hour to understand the course content.
【Grading Criteria】
Final grade will be calculated according to the following process: In-class activities & Homework (30%), Assignment (20%), Quiz (20%), and
Exam (30%).

授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
本授業では、学術的な文章を読む際の基本的な語彙力、文法力、構文解析力を養成することによって、リーディング力の向上を図る。語彙については日本語との一対一対応による暗記に留まることなく、文脈や文構造を幅広く考慮に入れて意味をとらえる力へと発展させる。また文法と構文解析については既習知識を活用・応用して実際の英文を読む力を養う。これらのスキルをもとに、精読を通して個々の文の内容を正確に把握したり、文章全体を簡潔にかつ迅速に要約したり、必要な情報を検索したりすることができる読解力の養成を目指す。

1. To build a strong vocabulary.
2. To improve grammatical competence.
3. To enhance academic reading ability.

In this course, students will practice reading articles, picking out key words/sentences, understanding the flow of paragraphs, and making summaries. You will be expected to attend all classes and contribute to classroom activities: reading task, Q & A, writing quiz, and group/pair work. You must be willing to try to express your ideas in English. At the beginning of class, feedback for the previous class is given using some comments from submitted reaction papers.
