Outline (in English)
The purpose of this class is to improve academic reading ability through the development of basic vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure analysis skills. Vocabulary development focuses on considering the context and structure to discern meaning, rather than strict translation between English and Japanese. Grammar and sentence structure instruction emphasizes the use and application of previous knowledge to read actual English. Using these skills, it aims to reinforce basic reading competence as well as rapidly and concisely summarize the gist of the content based on an understanding of paragraph structure.
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
•understand the grammar and meaning of each sentence in the context
•understand the paragraph structure of the text
•rephrase new words in plain English
•think critically about the topics of the TED presentations
Before each class meeting, students will be expected to have read the relevant passages from the textbook. Your required study time is at least one to two hours for each class meeting.

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
本授業では、学術的な文章を読む際の基本的な語彙力、文法力、構文解析力を養成することによって、リーディング力の向上を図る。語彙については日本語との一対一対応による暗記に留まることなく、文脈や文構造を幅広く考慮に入れて意味をとらえる力へと発展させる。また文法と構文解析については既習知識を活用・応用して実際の英文を読む力を養う。これらのスキルをもとに、精読を通して個々の文の内容を正確に把握したり、文章全体を簡潔にかつ迅速に要約したり、必要な情報を検索したりすることができる読解力の養成を目指す。
到達目標Goal
この授業では、以下の5つを主な目標とします。
1) 個々の文を正確に理解する。
2) パラグラフの構成を理解する。
3) 難しい語彙の簡単な英語の言い換えができる。
4) 1～3を発展させ、批判的思考力・分析力を養う。

この授業は、学生が予習・復習済みであることを前提に進む。
・復習課題でわからなかった箇所を確認し、授業中にフィードバックをする。
・リーディングを中心としつつ、適宜リスニング(動画視聴)、ライティングなども含め英語運用能力を総合的に高めるアクティビティを行う。
This class will be carried out on the assumption that each unit has been prepared, and the previous units reviewed by the students.
・Students will be asked to submit online exercise questions of the text each week. The feedback of the exercises to students will be done in class every week.
・Reading aloud is essential to improve your English in both preparation and review.

Each student will be asked to read aloud the passage of about 200 words at the mid-semester test.
The end-of-semester exam will cover Units 4-6.
