Outline (in English)
1[授業概要（Course outline）]
The purpose of this class is to improve academic reading ability through the development of basic vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure analysis skills. Vocabulary development focuses on considering the context and structure to discern meaning, rather than strict translation between English and Japanese. Grammar and sentence structure instruction emphasizes the use and application of previous knowledge to read actual English. Using these skills, it aims to reinforce basic reading competence as well as rapidly and concisely summarize the gist of the content based on an understanding of paragraph structure.
Students of this course will read popular topics on groundbreaking achievements in natural sciences, in the compiled textbook from Smart News website (Smithsonian.com). To have a more valid understanding of the news topics, students will also deal with doing certain exercises.

By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
1. to have a certain ability to read a scientific article/essay based on their necessary vocabulary and expressions, steadily following its context.
2. to have more positive reading attitude toward scientific topics with deeper understandings and interests in the concerning fields.
3[授業時間外の学習（Learning activities outside of classroom）]
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content and handle with assignment tasks.
4[成績評価の方法と基準（Grading Criteria /Policies）]
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following
Term-end examination: 50%、unit assignments : 30%、in class contribution: 20% (At least 60％ of all is required for grading.)

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
本授業では、学術的な文章を読む際の基本的な語彙力、文法力、構文解析力を養成することによって、リーディング力の向上を図る。語彙については日本語との一対一対応による暗記に留まることなく、文脈や文構造を幅広く考慮に入れて意味をとらえる力へと発展させる。また文法と構文解析については既習知識を活用・応用して実際の英文を読む力を養う。これらのスキルをもとに、精読を通して個々の文の内容を正確に把握したり、文章全体を簡潔にかつ迅速に要約したり、必要な情報を検索したりすることができる読解力の向上を目指す。
この授業では、スミソニアン協会がオンラインで発行するSmithsonian MagazineのSmart Newsから、わたしたちの日常に密接な関わりをもつ脳科学、ロボット工学、機械工学など諸分野における多彩な英語記事を読み、それらの分野での広く柔軟な英語読解力を養う。
到達目標Goal
脳科学、ロボット工学、機械工学、化学工学、環境科学、人間行動学、加えて絵画、ファッションなど私たちの生活に関わりのある興味深い最新のニュースを読む。より正確な語法・文法の理解に基づいて、情報を正確、明瞭、簡潔に伝える最先端の科学ニュースを読むことによって、広く柔軟な英語読解力を養う。

授業は使用テキスト（以下参照）の1,3,5,7 （奇数）Unitについて、Unit 構成 （Before You Read～ Reading～Comprehension Questions～ Read Better, Understand More[文法や表現法解説]～After You Read～Behind the Scene）に沿って進められる。受講者の挙手による積極的な応答（応答のない場合は名簿からの指名）によって進められる。。座席は指定（毎回同一席）となる。また一つの unit につき一回課題が出される。フィードバックについては、授業時には挙手応答に対して頻繁に、また課題への個別のコメントという形でも行われる。

本授業の準備・復習・宿題等の授業時間外学習は、4時間を標準とする。特にj十分な準備学習（予習）は挙手による積極的授業参加の動機ともなるので、よく行うこと。不明な個所は放置せず、遠慮せずに質問に来て解決すること。

一年時に使用した英語辞書（電子辞書可）を持参すること。他には必要に応じて適宜文献を紹介、あるいは資料を配付する。新聞、雑誌（ネットを含む）の科学記事に目を通す習慣を付けるとよい。
成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
授業平常点50％（挙手応答20％、課題30％）、学期末試験50％として、全体の60％以上の取得者に単位を認定する。
