Outline (in English)

Humans understand phenomena and express ideas by means of language which is a linear representation of sounds and words. What is the system of communication by which a meaning is conveyed in a series of sounds and language signs? The aim of this class is to answer this fundamental question by learning basic theories of phonetics, phonology, syntax, and semantics.

Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content using the slides uploaded on the system after the class.

At the end of this course, students will be able to:
•understand the basics of phonetics, phonology, morphology, and syntax with particular emphasis on determining the Japanese phonemes and basic sentence structures
•understand grammatical categories and their meanings in the framework of the three levels of the sentence structure
