Outline (in English)

This class reinforces the development of a rich vocabulary and accurate grammatical knowledge, and based on this knowledge, aims at the comprehensive development of the four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking). In the science and engineering fields, English is the common language. Technicians and scientists of the future will need the ability to comprehend and communicate in English to meet the need of society for high levels of English. In order to meet this need, this class emphasizes the development of basic, comprehensive skills and knowledge and the ability to apply them. Based on the needs of students, a variety of effective approaches will be used to strengthen basic English competency.

By the end of the course, students will be able to 1) heighten their awareness of correct usage of English grammar in writing and speaking, 2) listen to and understand short conversations, 3) develop reading skills and reading speed, 4) expand their vocabulary through university texts, 5) develop abilities as critical thinkers and readers, and 6) give a group presentation.

Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.

Final grade will be decided based on class participation (10%), presentation project (30%), midterm and final exams (60%).
