Outline (in English)
The purpose of this class is to develop the communicative competence necessary for effective participation in society and the world of work. The class aims to help students acquire a broad ability to communicate, starting from familiarity with daily conversation to explaining topics of students’ own interest or field of study, while deepening understanding of foreign cultures necessary for global citizens. Based on a firm foundation of basic skills, the class focuses on the future needs and interests of students as well as the ability to apply English to research and work in a setting of small, leveled classes for maximum effectiveness.
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
•choose from a range of Communication Strategies to deliver a message to an audience over arrange of media
•write an effective summary paragraph
•write an analytical book report
•make interesting and meaningful presentations on a range of academic topics
•carry on a group discussion on a range of academic topics
Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.):
Each student should read two books a week from the library and come ready write a book review summarizing the book and give an opinion of it in the form of an academic talk or presentation.
Presentations should be prepared and practiced at home, and students should come prepared to give clear and smooth talks with limited help from notes.
Grading Criteria:
Homework: 20%
Class performance (effort, participation, presentations): 30%
Project Work: 30%
Test: 20%

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
本授業は、英語を実社会で有効に使用して仕事をするために必要な英語のコミュニケーション力を養成することを目的とする。日常生活に関わる会話に慣れることから、自分の興味のあるトピックや専門領域の事柄について英語で説明できるところまで幅広いコミュニケーション力の習得を目指すとともに、国際人として異文化に対する理解を深める。確かな基礎力の上に、将来的ニーズや興味に即した英語力、研究や実務につながる応用力をつけられるよう、授業は習熟度別の少人数制で行い、効果向上を図る。

Class time will be focused on group and pair work; Active Learning methodologies will be evidenced in all project work. There will be opportunities for students to write and prepare short research-based presentations. Students will be expected to read assigned (or researched) texts each week and report both in verbal and written form.
During class, feedback on homework is given using examples from successful reports / assignments. Students are encouraged to share their work and reflect on methods of improvement. The grading methodology is explained at the start of the course along with key information on presenting work properly and advice on achieving good grades.

Presentations may now use automated slide progression. Add an audio-visual element has been introduced to assist in understanding summary writing. Book genres have been clarified in the Week 3 lesson. More time is now available in class for practice with MLA.

Access to a PC with an internet connection, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and a PDF reader.
*Please note that all work submitted to the teacher must only be in (Microsoft Word) .docx format or (Microsoft PowerPoint) .pptx format: not PDF, Google Docs or anything else.*
If this course is run in an online format, it will use Zoom and the Hosei University Hoppi system. *For simplicity, all messages, announcements, homework and assignments will be posted in the “Announcements” section of the course site.* Students will also be instructed to regularly visit the “Forums” section in order to communicate with other students, give and receive support etc.
Students will need an email address which they can check regularly in order to communicate with the teacher. This address must not change during the semester.
*Please make sure that the electronic equipment which you use for the course is working: excuses for missed deadlines or missing homework related to electronic device troubles will not be accepted.*
