Outline (in English)

[Course outline]
In this course, first, we will review the history of thermodynamics and consider the thermodynamic and statistical meanings of entropy. Based on these, free energy and Boltzmann factor will be introduced. Students will acquire the ability to think about the phenomena around them from the viewpoint of statistical physics.
[Learning Objectives]
1. Students will be able to understand the concept of thermodynamics and statistical physics.
2. Students will be able to apply the concept and the method of thermodynamics and statistical physics to understanding and explaining the phenomena around them.
[Learning activities outside of classroom]
Students will be expected to read distributed slides before attending each lecture.
[Grading policies] Grading will be decided based on the assignments (50%) and the term-end exam/report (50%).
