< Course outline > This course introduces the operation principle of various functional optical devices used in optical communication system
< Learning objectives >
By the end of the course, students are expected to acquire the following knowledge:
- Understanding the operation principle of various functional devices used in optical communication systems
- The basic knowledge to compose optical communication system
< Learning activities outside of classroom >
Before each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content. Moreover, additional work is expected in case the report is assigned as homework.
< Grading Criteria >
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following:
Term-end examination: 70%, Short reports: 30%

光通信で使用されている各種機能デバイスの動作原理、使用方法の理解を目的とする。
到達目標Goal
各種の光機能デバイスの動作原理を理解し、説明できるようにする。その知識をもとに、光通信システムを構成する基礎を習得する。

対面講義とする。資料をダウンロードし、予習をしておくこと。電磁気学、光伝送工学の履修を必須とする。量子力学を履修していればなお良い。光導波路の基礎から始め、導波路の基礎特性を理解し、各種の平面光波回路型受動光デバイスについて学ぶ。その後、光送信機、受信器を構成するための光能動デバイス、すなわち、レーザ、フォトダイオード、光変調器について学び、これらの素子を一括集積する光集積回路について解説する。光ファイバ型デバイスについても解説し、最後に、光通信素子の最新動向を学ぶ。
