Outline (in English)

(Course outline)Recently, a number of non-metal materials have been applied to machinery as structural components. This course aims at learning the proper-ties and performance as well as processing methods for manufacturing of the non-metal materials. The scope of this course includes specifically polymer and ceramic materials among a wide variety of non-metal materials.
(Learning Objectives) The goal of the course includes:
(1) Understanding the basic concept of classifying the materials into metal, non-metal and composite materials,
(2) Understanding the basic structures, mechanical properties and molding methods of polymer materials, and
(3) Understanding the basic characteristics and typical applications of ceramic materials.
(Learning activities outside of classroom)There are almost no textbooks that cover all plastics, ceramics, and composites in one volume, so students should prepare and review using individual textbooks or reference books for each material. In addition, students should acquire the habit of always thinking about what materials are used in everyday life, why they are shaped the way they are, and how they are made.
(Grading Criteria /Policy)The student’s overall grade will be based on the following criteria:
- Term-end examination: 100%
