Outline (in English)

【Course outline】The theme of this class is number theory. The main purpose of this course is to gain a personal understanding of abstract mathematical concepts related to integers and to acquire the skills to apply them to concrete objects. We also use figures and diagrams to facilitate understanding of each concept. As a motivation for learning, throughout the course we consider the quesiton of how number thoery is useful in our life.
When studying the basic properties of integers, we aim to relearn, rather than review, their related theorems that would make us realize that what you used to take for granted is not the norm.

【Learning objectives】The goals are to:
1. review the basic properties of integers,
2. learn the RSA cryptosystem as an application to engineering, and
3. study the basic properties of Gaussian integers and polynomial rings.

【Learning activities outside of classroom】 Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.

【Grading criteria / policy】Term-end examination: 50%, short reports: 50%
