Outline (in English)

Course outline: International transactions have become increasingly important to every country in the world today. These are mainly transactions in goods, services and financial assets that require currencies as the medium of exchange. In this course we will learn about these international transactions, with a special focus on financial assets and currencies.
Learning objectives: Through the course, students are expected to be able to understand the significance and content of external transactions, the structure of the foreign exchange market, exchange rate determination, the relations between the exchange rate, the interest rate, the price level, and the real economy, and the way by which macroeconomic policies are conducted and their effects in an open economy. In addition, students are expected to learn about and be interested in various issues in international finance, including international capital markets, exchange intervention, currency crises, the euro as a common currency, international finance in developing countries, and global current account imbalances.
Learning activities outside of classroom: To deepen understanding, the students are expected to read the class materials (lecture notes, textbooks, and newspaper/journal articles) after each lecture. Also, homework is assigned frequently. It is expected that at least 4 hours of study time will be required for study outside of class time.
Grading criteria: Grading is based on the students' homework and midterm & final report performance with weights being 30%, 30% and 40%, respectively.
