Outline (in English)

In this lecture, students will study the advantages and disadvantages of a market economy through the theory of perfect competition, externalities, and a natural monopoly. First, we will explore the theory of perfect competition, which brings us a foundation to consider the merits of a market economy. Students will learn that market equilibrium, which examines the consequences of market transactions, achieves desirable transactions from the perspective of economic welfare. Second, students will study the theories of externalities and the natural monopoly and understand the cases in which the market transaction does not achieve desirable outcomes in terms of economic welfare. In that case, the government policy can complement the role of the market.
This course aims to understand the advantages and disadvantages of a market economy based on microeconomics and consider the desired relationship between markets and government in modern society. This lecture will focus on the perfectly competitive market, externalities, and natural monopoly.
Students are required to prepare and review this class for at least four hours per week. Students are also required to review Microeconomics AB (2nd year) and the lecture materials distributed by the class support system (Hoppii) to prepare for the lecture. Be sure to do the practice exercises as a review of the lecture. Evaluation will be based on classroom examinations (100%). Details will be announced in the lecture.
