Outline (in English)

In this course, students will learn about theoretical industrial organization based on microeconomic theory. This course aims to understand basic microeconomic and game theory and apply these theories to analyze interdependent relationships among firms, such as price competition, product differentiation, and vertical relations. Applying microeconomic theory and game theory, students will learn the advantages and disadvantages of competition among firms and how problems caused by competition can be solved.

In the early part of the lecture, students will learn basic microeconomic theory and the theory of games. Based on this knowledge, students will learn the fundamentals of the industrial organization theory, such as the theory of monopolistic firms and oligopolistic firms. These theoretical foundations will be essential for analyzing vertical relations and competition through product differentiation, which students will study later in this class. Since microeconomics and game theory are built on mathematics, this lecture will provide students with mathematical operations (mathematical formulas, proofs of propositions, etc.). Furthermore, the lecturer will explain the correspondence between the theory and the real economy (case studies, etc.).

Students are recommended to prepare for and review each class for two hours each (in total, four hours).

Evaluation will be based on classroom examinations (100%).
Details will be announced in the lecture.
