Outline (in English)

(Course outline)We learn about Europe's "national identity" through history from the Middle Ages to modern times. First, I will introduce the structure of modern "nationalism" and explain that there are infinitely diverse "nationalisms" among modern people, but that they are nevertheless unified in certain regions due to some historical circumstances. Make sure. We will then look at the different types of situations in France, Britain (United Kingdom) and Germany (former Holy Roman Empire) and learn what brings each one together.
(Learning Objectives)We learned that "nationalism" was established under the various conditions of modern sovereign states, and that its direction depended on the early modern historical development of each country. By examining the examples of three European countries, each with a different type of early modern history, it is possible to explain rationally and objectively from a historical perspective how this can develop into emotional attachment to a country.
(Learning activities outside of classroom)
・Be sure to read the handouts distributed in advance before class and keep the general content in mind (1 hour each time).
・Before class, I will research all the words I am learning for the first time and words I only know by name using reference books and the internet, and I will make notes on a handout (for 1 hour each time).
・After class, students will research on their own or ask questions to the instructor about points they did not understand during class (1 hour each time).
・Listen to the lecture, take notes on what you think, and prepare for writing your final report (1 hour each session)
(Grading Criteria /Policy)
・Evaluation will be based on the general score (20%), quizzes for each unit (30%), and final report (50%).
・Are you able to accurately grasp the historical changes in national identity, including nationalism? [First evaluation process: corresponds to the 30% quiz for each unit], and experience national identity in each era according to historical methods. The standard is whether you can analyze and explain scientifically and logically [Second evaluation process: corresponds to 50% of the final report].
