Outline (in English)

(Course outline)
In this course, we will focus on the activities of Tokugawa Yoshimune, the eighth shogun of the Edo shogunate.During his time as a shogun, this person focused on proofreading books collected by successive shoguns since Tokugawa Ieyasu. He himself proofread the texts of historical books originating from ancient or medieval times that teach the origins of the rituals of court nobles and samurai families, while also ordering book magistrates and scholars to inspect and scrutinize the texts of books in various fields.
In this course, we will examine Tokugawa Yoshimune's own activities in the course of his business from a reconstructive perspective. Then, consider why such work was carried out. While paying attention to the centralization that gives and preserves authority to historical texts themselves, I would also like to think about how they relate to us.
As a side note, the lecture will proceed while reading early modern Japanese historical materials related to this theme.
