Outline (in English)

(Course outline)
This subject covers a period of approximately one century, from the mid-17th century to the mid-18th century. Although the period of observation is not necessarily long, there are several events during this period that make us think about the historical significance of the establishment of early modern Japan. In this course, we will discuss countermeasures against ``imitation drugs'' implemented by the Edo Shogunate during this period. Specifically, we will examine how the countermeasures in question were developed based on what kind of issues were recognized during this period, taking into account the political significance of medicine at the time in relation to relief. We will then share the understanding that this measure evolved with the aim of establishing strong external self-sufficiency starting in the early 18th century, and consider the factors that led to the strong emergence of such an orientation.
As a side note, the lecture will proceed while reading early modern Japanese historical materials related to this theme.
(Learning Objectives)
1. Be able to explain the progress of countermeasures against "imitation medicines" implemented by the Edo shogunate from the mid-17th century to the mid-18th century.
