Outline (in English)

(Course outline) By reading Thomas Hobbes' Leviathan (1651) to understand the historical background and the intent of the text accurately, we will learn how "state" (political communities, in the word of the time "Commonwealth") were perceived in early modern Europe, and consider what kind of political and intellectual conditions it was based on.
(Learning Objectives) By analytically interpreting the cutting-edge views on nature, humanity, and nation in the mid-17th century, which was the intersection of continuity from the Middle Ages and connection to modernity, we explore the possibilities of social metacognition reached by European society at the time. Understand its limitations and build a foothold for analyzing early modern and modern European history.
(Learning outside of classroom) First half: you can read the subscription section in advance. In introduction, it is often difficult to understand the author's intentions, so read while referring to the notes you took in the previous class (taking ca. 2 hours).
Latter half: since we will be assigning flipped learning, we will compile the contents into a resume according to the assignment and share it with the students. If you are in charge, you will need 3 to 4 hours of preparation. It is also recommended that you review for about an hour each time.
(Grading Criteria/Policy)
・Reading aloud, presenting interpretations, and participating in discussions (check each time): 50%
・Resume creation and explanation in flipped classroom: 30%
・Final report: 20%
