Outline (in English)

(Course outline)
We review the history of European international relations from the end of the Middle Ages to the European Union from the perspective of coexistence, cooperation, and legal order, which is different from power struggles between sovereign states. Through this, we will learn from a historical perspective why European countries are able to strengthen their relationships and move toward integration, despite their history of conflict and war.

(Learning Objectives)
Beyond the borders of European countries, we look at the natural, social, economic, religious, and intellectual conditions of the northwestern Eurasian world, observe the relationships between political communities that have arisen there, and examine the process by which they become institutionalized. learn. By doing so, by simply increasing the amount of "knowledge" we can renew our understanding of the relations between European countries, which tend to remain at a superficial understanding of repeating power relations, understand the pluralistic political community, and make use of that understanding. Acquire the ability to compose history.

(Learning activities outside of classroom)
・Be sure to read the handouts distributed in advance before class and keep the general content in mind (1 hour each time).
・Before class, I will research all the words I am learning for the first time and words I only know by name using reference books and the internet, and I will make notes on a handout (for 1 hour each time).
・After class, students will research on their own or ask questions to the instructor about points they did not understand during class (1 hour each time).
・Listen to the lecture, take notes on what you think, and prepare for writing your final report (1 hour each session)

(Grading Criteria/Policy)
・Evaluation will be based on the average score (20%), quizzes for each unit (30%), and final report (50%).
- Historically understand the historical conditions for the establishment of modern international relations, which spread from Europe to the rest of the world [first evaluation process: corresponds to the 30% quiz for each unit], and consider their significance and issues on their own. The standard is to be able to express from a historical perspective how we should be involved in the modern international society that continues today [Second evaluation process: corresponds to 50% of the final report].
