Outline (in English)

(Course outline)
This course discusses the formation of traditional European societies by tracing the development of the so-called "Early Modern Period" from the 15th to the 18th century, and examines the characteristics of the modern society that was formed based on this. Through this work, students will be able to learn about the significance of modernity itself, its problems, and the pluralism of international society that arises from these gradations.

(Learning Objectives)
We will learn about the period of transition from traditional society to modern society in Europe from three aspects: (1) individuals, (2) nations, and (3) communication, deepen your awareness of the European order that was established on top of it, and understand its legacy and challenges. By doing so, you will acquire strong historical analytical and compositional skills that allow you to relativize other cultural areas, especially Japanese society, and empathize with free, rational, and different viewpoints.

(Learning activities outside of classroom)
・Be sure to read the handouts distributed in advance before class and keep the general content in mind (1 hour each time).
・Before class, I will research all the words I am learning for the first time and words I only know by name using reference books and the internet, and I will make notes on a handout (for 1 hour each time).
・After class, students will research on their own or ask questions to the instructor about points they did not understand during class (1 hour each time).
・Listen to the lecture, take notes on what you think, and prepare for writing your final report (1 hour each session)

(Grading Criteria /Policy)
・Evaluation will be based on the average score (20%), quizzes for each unit (30%), and final report (50%).
・Be able to understand the period of transition from traditional society to modern society in Europe from the aspects of individuals, nations, and communication [first evaluation process: corresponds to the 30% quiz for each unit], and understand the European order. The standard is to be able to consider the characteristics on your own and express in your own words what meaning they have for us today [Second evaluation process: corresponds to 50% of the term report].
