Outline (in English)

In this class we will explore the theme of translation in the broadest sense of the word. Not only will we study English translations of Japanese literature, we will consider the cultural contexts in which these translations emerged. We will also discuss how some writers translate themselves into their second language. There will be some lectures, but most of the class time will be devoted to students' active participation. Grades will be determined based on presentations (30%), participation (30%) and the final paper (40%).
