Outline (in English)
Familiarizing yourself with English paragraph/essay structure and mechanics and putting language knowledge and writing experience to work more effectively.
<Learning Objectives>
Through understanding each model paragraph/essay,
・You will be able to recognize and identify key structures
・You will learn how to gather ideas and organize them into groups (outlining)
・You will get used to editing and improving your writing
・You will be able to apply the structures to your own writing and produce formal/academic writing
<Learning activities outside of classroom>
At each class, you are expected to have read and completed the exercises of the relevant section from the text. Your required study time is at least four hours for a class.

➀70% by Assessed Work submitted at the end of each unit
②30% by active participation in each class

Familiarizing yourself with English paragraph/essay structure and mechanics and putting language knowledge and writing experience to work more effectively.
論理的な文章の展開を理解し、書きたいことを読み手にわかりやすく伝えるためのパラグラフ構成を学び、その後エッセイへと発展させる。
注）英語表現演習(Writing)(5)B と併せて受講することが望ましい。
到達目標Goal
Through understanding each model paragraph/essay, you will

論文の基本構成要素とその論理性を理解し、学生のレポート作成の基礎となるParagraphやEssayの構造とスタイルをマスターしていく。授業の中で段階を踏みながら各自で選択したトピックに基づくライティングをし、その後のグループワークで自分では気づかなかった内容的な不足個所を指摘・提案しあうことで、互いを高めあうことを目指す。

Acquiring the idea of what an English paragraph should be like, you will improve skills to write your own work.
1) In each unit you will first internalize the essential writing process following the guidance (such as a reading about the topic; vocabulary building exercise) given in the text.
2) You will then gather ideas, organize an outline, draft, revise, edit and submit the final draft.

論文の基本構成とその論理的展開を理解し、レポート作成の基礎となるparagraphのスタイルをマスターし、その後essayへと発展させていく。英語で書かれている教科書を使い、予習していることを前提に授業をすすめる。
フィードバックは、課題提出後に授業内又は「授業支援システム」やメールを通じて行います。

模範となるパラグラフやエッセイは、内容を理解し問題を解くだけにとどまらず、その構成スタイルを把握し自分のライティングに役立てていく。フィードバックされた提出物も再度見直すこと。
本授業の準備・復習時間は４時間を標準とする。

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
➀70% by Assessed Work submitted at the end of each unit
②30% by active participation in each class
注１）出席が7割未満の場合は原則として単位修得の資格を失う
注２）Unitごとに提出するAssessed Workと、授業中の参加意欲や学びへの積極性と努力による総合評価となる。各センテンスの意味が通じているかだけでなく、各ユニットで学ぶポイントが反映されているか、そして各paragraph/essayの構成がロジックに沿ったものかを評価する
学生の意見等からの気づきChanges following student comments
Writing には絶対的な「答え」はありません。自分の主張したいこと、言いたいことは何か、そしてそれを如何に読者に伝えられるか、ここが評価の軸となります。
受講者が「英語で長い文章を書くのが億劫でしたが書き方を学んだことで前向きになれた」と感じた様に、まず英語の「文章の構成」を理解することから始めます。その後テーマに沿ってドラフトの骨格となる「話の流れ」をしっかり考えてからドラフト作成に入ります。
基本的に書く作業は一人で行いますが、ドラフトを誰かと読みあい評価するペアまたはグループ・ワークでは、活発に意見を出しあうことでお互いを高められる利点があります。受講者は「自分では気づかない矛盾やあいまいな表現」を指摘され「自分の意図しない文」を避けることでよりわかりやすいエッセイを心がけることで、「自分の主張をある程度の説得力と論理性を持って説明することが出来るようになった」と成長を実感しています。
刺激をしあうレベルの高いクラスになる時と、静かに自分の作業に徹底するクラスと、年度により違いが出るように授業の雰囲気は皆さん次第で決まります。
学生が準備すべき機器他Equipment student needs to prepare
言語の授業なので辞書は必須。授業内でのパソコン使用可。提出物は指示されたフォーマットに沿ってワードで作成し提出（授業内または授業支援システムより）してもらいます。
その他の重要事項Others
《重要》
「英語表現演習（Writing）」(5)(6)(7)(8)、「英語表現演習（Speaking）」(5)(6)(7)(8)、「英語表現演習（翻訳）」(1)(2)と「Academic Writing」の春学期秋学期科目合わせて22科目については、英文学科指定の「定員」が設定されています。また、「事前抽選」を実施します。詳細はガイダンスおよび掲示で案内します。抽選が４月初頭（初回授業日よりも前）に実施されるので、必ず期日内に申請してください。基本的に、春学期と秋学期をセットで履修することになり、秋学期の科目も春学期に申請する必要があります。
「事前抽選結果」発表時には、定員に空きのある科目のリストも掲示します。それらの科目の履修を希望する場合は、必ず春学期の初回授業に出席してください。担当教員が選抜を行う場合があります。
※ 「英語表現演習（総合）」に関しては、別途「事前登録」が実施されるので、履修希望者は期日内（４月初頭）にそちらに申請をしてください。
※ ２年次クラス指定の「英語表現演習（Writing）」(1)(2)(3)、「英語表現演習（Speaking）」(1)(2)(3)に関しては、事前抽選および選抜はありません。
