Outline (in English)

1. Course outline
This is an introductory course on linguistics as an empirical science. It covers main areas of linguistics (e.g., syntax, morphology, semantics, phonetics, and phonology) and gives basic knowledge and illustrates specific research topics in these areas. This course aims to help students understand a scientific method of theoretical linguistics and find a research area that suits their interests.

2. Learning objectives
In this course, students are expected:

(a) to acquire the ability to understand basic knowledge in each field of linguistics.
(b) to become sensitive to, and to acquire the abiliy to give a rudimentary analysis to, facts about languages that are spoken around them.
(c) to gain a correct understanding of a scientific research methodology.

3. Learning activities outside of classroom
Preparatory study and review time for this course are 2 hours each.

(a) Preparation
Before each class meeting, take a look at the handout to be delivered beforehand.In addition, you should also recall the contents of the previous class meeting that are related to the upcoming meeting.

(b) Review
You should reflect on what you have learned in the classroom, and work on the assignment if any. If you encounter a problem, you should first tackle it yourself, and let me know the results, however imperfect they are; I will then give a feedback to your attempt. Furthermore, employ the analysis methods you have learned to solve the problem you encounter in your daily life that is similar to the phenomenon taken up in the class.

Term-end examination: 100%
