The goal of this class is to assist students to communicate Internationally (and smoothly), in English, to improve their career opportunities.
英語でのオーラル・コミュニケーションを、よりスムーズに取れるようになることを目指します。こうした技能の向上は、みなさんの将来やキャリアに役立つでしょう(詳細は以下の英文の記載を読んでください)。
到達目標Goal
The goal of this course is to get students to speak, listen, read, write, & COMMUNICATE in smooth, modern English. Some grammar-correction of assignments/submissions will be necessary. Assignment-revising will also be necessary, during Online Learning.

Students will be challenged to integrate their skills in English listening, speaking, reading, & writing in an advanced manner, via exposure to authentic English materials such as English News videos & audio, and inspirational video/audio talks (including TED Talks). Students will then be required to practice their English communication skills via pair practice conversations with their classmates & professor.
Feedback about student answers will be given by the teacher, DURING classes; and sometimes via e-mail. If students would like additional feedback: please ASK the teacher, during class time.

Pair-practice, re: a range of adjectives about students' five Summer Break activities/ Past Tense, in smooth, spoken English.
第2回[対面/face to face]:Introducing yourself, in spoken English.
Pricing items in English; & answering questions about prices in English.
PLUS: ''Students will introduce themselves to each other in modern English, via Online video/audio 'chat'.
Students will be asked about prices of common items, in English; and will be asked to verbally answer such questions in spoken English.
第3回[対面/face to face]:Asking & answering about subway/train directions, in English.
Students will learn and practice how to reply to requests for subway/train directions, in spoken English.
第4回[対面/face to face]:Hallowe'en, part 1: what are Hallowe'en customs; and in what countries has Hallowe'en traditionally been celebrated?
Students will be asked to investigate, write down, and discuss Hallowe'en traditions, in English.
第5回[対面/face to face]:Hallowe'en, part 2: Using 'would' & 'will'.
Students will pair-practice correct use of 'would' + past tense, & 'will' + future tense, to describe possible Hallowe'en costumes & activities.
第6回[対面/face to face]:''The Seven W's'': (Who...?/ What...?/ When...?/ Where...?/ Why...?/ Which...?/ How...?)
Students will learn how to verbally ask others, and to reply in smooth English, to questions about ''the 7 W's".

Students will learn how to reply verbally to questions about what they would do, in a variety of situations, in spoken English.
第8回[対面/face to face]:''What time is it?'', & ''Could you please tell me what time it is...?''
Students will practice how to verbally use polite ways of asking, in English; AND about telling time(s).
第9回[対面/face to face]:Thanksgiving customs (& discussion in English), re: Thanksgiving customs in the U.S./Canada.
Students will be asked to suss out traditional Thanksgiving customs...& to explain them in spoken English.
第10回[対面/face to face]:''What are five things that YOU are thankful for?''
Students will be asked to write down, and then to pair-practice in spoken English, five things that they are thankful for.
第11回[対面/face to face]:Christmas customs & video/listening exercises, in English.
Students will watch/listen to an English video/song about Christmas; and will be asked to answer questions in written/spoken English.
第12回[対面/face to face]:''What are your plans for Christmas/ OhShoGatsu?''
Pair practice: students will be asked to write down & then practice verbally (in English) their Future plans for Christmas/ OhShoGatsu.
第13回[対面/face to face]:Speaking EXAM, re: all topics that students learned and practiced during the Fall semester.
Speaking EXAM: students will be asked to reply, in detail (& in smooth, spoken English) about a variety of topics which were learned in the Fall semester.
第14回[対面/face to face]:''How was your Christmas/ OhShoGatsu Break?''
Students will be asked to write down (and practice with classmates) adjectives and explanations about their five OhShoGatsu/Christmas activities.

Please do homework well before the deadline [NOT ''ichiyazuke]; please learn to wake up early, and to arrive in [ONLINE] class ON TIME [not late]; please don't work at part-time jobs excessively; and please keep a weekly notebook/binder for this class, using pen.本授業の準備学習・復習時間は各1時間を標準とします。/ University guidelines suggest preparation and review should be around an hour a week for a one-credit course.

A textbook might be chosen, depending on students' levels & requirements. Also, some handouts will be distributed to students. In addition, some News videos & TED Talks may be assigned as in-class or at-home viewing (with questions about those videos).

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
Tentatively, grading may depend on in-class responses (approximately 35%); speaking exams spoken replies (approximately 25%); class participation/motivation (20%); and homework (20%).
*IMPORTANT: A MAXIMUM OF THREE ABSENCES IS ALLOWED...& ONE 'LATE' IS EQUIVALENT TO HALF AN ABSENCE. MORE THAN THREE ABSENCES MAY RESULT IN FAILURE TO OBTAIN A CREDIT(S) FOR THIS CLASS.*

Please make sure to bring a binder & binder paper, every class; pens; & a black marker pen.
{+ Up to 7 out of 14 classes MIGHT be conducted online, depending on Health Issues & Virus problems. Therefore, Students MIGHT need 'Online Learning' equipment: a computer; fast HOME Wi-Fi (NOT cafe Internet); FREE downloads of Skype & Zoom; computer microphone; AND headphones/earphones. [Cameras might not be used, to protect privacy...and to save Internet Bandwidth/speed.]
So, please prepare your computer/ FAST HOME Wi-Fi/ headphones/ microphone/ FREE Skype account/ FREE Zoom account/FREE 'Romaji' gmail account; & please test them WELL, long before we meet.
