Outline (in English)

【授業の概要(Course outline)】
Theme: Unraveling the "Old Documents" of the Edo Period
The purpose of this seminar is to think about the lifestyles of the people of the Edo period and the use and management of natural resources, while practically learning how to read and what terms mean through the unraveling of "old documents" of the Edo period. The documents to be discussed include records of praise for filial piety, diaries in which villagers wrote down their daily activities, administrative documents concerning the use of water and mountains, and applications appealing for the resolution of disputes.

【到達目標(Learning Objectives)】
In this course, students will learn about the lives of people in the Edo period and the use and management of natural resources. The objectives of this course are (1) to be able to explain the meaning and usage of historical terms and how to read and understand historical materials based on specific examples, and (2) to cultivate the ability to formulate their own "questions," derive their own "answers," and discuss constructively while respecting diverse opinions.

【授業時間外の学習(Learning activities outside of classroom)】
Please refer to the handouts and literature and historical materials related to the theme for preparatory study and review. Please be aware of your own interests and actively collect and read relevant literature and historical materials. Also, please go out for fieldwork (including visits to local museums, local libraries, etc.) to the extent possible. The standard preparation and review time for this course is 2 hours each.

【成績評価の方法と基準(Grading Criteria /Policy)】
Grading will be based on reports (40%) and in-class presentations (60%). Both will be evaluated based on the state of commitment to research and study, the richness of the content, and originality.
