Outline (in English)

[Seminar Outline]
In 2024, we will consider "diversity" and "tolerance. In modern society, we need to coexist with diverse others. Particularly in Japan, against the backdrop of a declining birthrate and an aging population, policies are being implemented to increase the number of foreign workers in order to secure a workforce, but with a reluctance toward immigration. Against this backdrop, we will consider how we can actually create a diverse, tolerant and sustainable society, focusing on coexistence with people who have ties to foreign countries. The content will be directly related to the Goal 17 partnership of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

[Learning Objectives]
Students are expected to take part in group talk and various communications vigorously. Students will be able to understand basic idea/concept "diversity", "tolerance", and "multiculturalism" and to nurture their values and attitudes towards an effective measure to construct a sustainable society.

[Learning Activities outside of classroom]
Students are required to prepare for and review the lectures using the materials introduced in each lecture.
Students are required to read carefully the basic literature and the given assignments (including English texts) before attending the exercises. Read through as much as possible of the reference books introduced in the lectures. Students should have opportunities to actively gather in groups to discuss issues. The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.

[Grading Criteria/Policy]
Grading will be based on performance in the regular session (active participation and contribution to discussions, etc.) (70%) and the final report (30%).
