Outline (in English)

(Course outline) Theme: Physical fundamentals for energy and materials In this course we learn fundamentals of physics. Features concerning energy and materials will be clarified with relation to environmental problems on the earth. The following themes will mainly be examined: the law of motion, the concept of energy, the units of energy and power, energy conversion, energy balance on the earth, heat and its capacity, the three states of substances, molecular dynamics for gases and liquids, thermal engine and the heat efficiency, thermal expansion of liquids and solids, the mechanism of thermal transference (conduction, convection, and radiation), phase transition among three states (melting, boiling, and sublimation), fundamentals of wave phenomena, electric circuit, magnetism and electricity, the structure of atomic nuclear and energy, the fission and radioactivity, the first and the second law of thermodynamics, etc. They are instances lectured in this course. (Learning Objectives)At the end of this class, we are expected to have the knowledge of fundamentals of physics. The concept of energy and materials is expected to be acquired in class. We will explain the meaning of units appearing in nature. The concept of entropy is necessary to be understood. Students will learn the mechanism of environmental problems from the viewpoint of physics. (Learning activities outside of classroom) We will be expected to spend two hours to prepare research report before each class. After it we need two hours to understand the content. The sum is four hours for each class. (Grading Criteria /Policy) The grade of the class is decided with the term-end examination 80% and reports presented in class 20%.
